Dan & Char´s walk on the Camino

Sometimes the camino is paved

It was fun and incredibly scenic and great exercise! We walked for 5 days on the route, all of which was in the Basque country. It’s a great way to get an “up close and personal” view of the countryside and the towns, monuments and villages along the way. There were many times when we felt like we must be in Switzerland. The mountains and hills were so green and beautiful, dotted with farms and cows with cowbells! One big difference: the ocean was always close to us, offering magnificent views. The trail was occasionally very challenging – particularly when we took an alternate route. The hillsides along the coast are often very steep, and sometimes there is not all that much trail.

Each night we stopped in a town where we had found a small hotel. There are a variety of accommodations available along the Camino. One of our favorites was a rural hotel that had fabulous views, and had been recently remodeled, so it resembled a Napa Valley wine country hotel. The food, service and accommodations were to die for, and probably about ¼ the price of a similar accommodation in California. Another favorite was a rural grain mill and blacksmith shop that had been converted into a modern hotel, now run by a local family. There are a variety of accommodation alternatives, including some very inexpensive ones described here.

We On the Camino de Santiago againopted to carry all the belongings we would need for the few days. An option is to hire a taxi that will drive your backpack or suitcase to the next hotel! We learned that costs about 20 to 30 euros per day.

The section we hiked is full of attractive beaches and towns. One day in the town of Zarautz, we even had enough time to stop to sunbathe and body surf at the beach.

      Thanks Carol,
You and Joe inspire us! In fact we are currently making plans to go to Italy to hike Cinque Terre due to your entusiasm about your experiences there.
